Meaning of Research: Research is an art of scientific investigation.
Definition: Research is an original contribution to the existing stock of knowledge making for its advancement. It is the pursuit of truth by the help of study, observation, comparison and experiment.
In other words, the search of knowledge via objective and systematic methods of finding solution to a problem is called Research.
Objectives of Research:
- To gain familiarity with the phenomenon or to achieve a new insight into it. For example, Exploratory or formulated research.
- To explain the characteristics of a particular situation, individual or a group. For example, Descriptive research.
- To determine the frequency with which something happens or with which it is associated. For example, Diagnostic research.
- To study the cause and effect or to test the hypothesis of a casual relationship between variables.
Characteristics of Research:
1) It is always directed towards the solution of a problem.
2) It is always based on empirical or observable evidences.
3) It involves precise observation and accurate description.
4) Gives emphasis to the development of theories, principles and generalizations, which are very helpful in accurate predictions regarding the variable under study.
5) It is systematic, objective and logical.

- Applied research and action research.
